In line with its mandated role to empower and strengthen good governance, and enhance capacities of local authorities, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Municipality of Beirut, to further expand their existing close partnership. The signing ceremony was held at the Municipality of Beirut and attended by the Governor of Beirut, Honourable Judge Marwan Abboud,  Mayor and members of the municipal council, as well as UN-Habitat Lebanon staff.

Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, inaugurated the region’s first project that will upcycle organic waste into high-quality products. The venture by innovative homegrown startup Circa Biotech farms black soldier fly (BSF) larvae, fed by food leftovers before being turned into animal proteins, organic fertilizers, and oils.

On May 24th 2022, during the Electric Vehicle Innovation Summit (EVIS), Emirates Transport and NEV Investment have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center to officially establish a Joint Venture for the development, construction, marketing, operation, and management of the New Energy Vehicle Project in the UAE.

In line with its efforts to support local authorities in addressing current socio-economic and basic service challenges, and within the framework of the Municipal Empowerment and Resilience Programme (MERP) implemented jointly by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through funding from the European Union,  the Regional Technical Office (RTO) in Bourj Hammoud was inaugurated today under the patronage of the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities.

UN-Habitat joins forces with the private sector to reduce plastic and glass waste in the MENA region

In an effort to limit the environmental impact of plastic and glass waste in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, UN-Habitat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding in July 2021 with Development Inc., Diageo, IBI Group, Nestlé Waters and PepsiCo, to jointly promote sustainable waste management and responsible production and consumption within the private sector and general public.

After two days of urban deliberations, the first National Urban Forum of Lebanon, organized by UN-Habitat in partnership with ESCWA, concluded, confirming that the future socio-economic recovery and sustainable development of the country must place Lebanese cities at the heart of these efforts.

Saudi Arabia’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai has won the ‘Best Pavilion’ award, as well as two honorary awards.

The Kingdom was selected by EXHIBITOR magazine, which hands out awards for each edition of the world-famous exhibition.
The Saudi Arabia pavilion won the award in the ‘large suites’ category. It also received honorary awards for best exterior design and best display.

Today, UN-Habitat and CatalyticAction inaugurated a number of innovatively rehabilitated sidewalks in the neighbourhood of Karantina, close to the Beirut Governmental Hospital, the National HIV and TB Centre and Karantina Public Park. The project was implemented in close collaboration with the Municipality of Beirut.
