In line with its efforts to support local authorities in addressing current socio-economic and basic service challenges, and within the framework of the Municipal Empowerment and Resilience Programme (MERP) implemented jointly by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through funding from the European Union,  the Regional Technical Office (RTO) in Bourj Hammoud was inaugurated today under the patronage of the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities.

UN-Habitat joins forces with the private sector to reduce plastic and glass waste in the MENA region

In an effort to limit the environmental impact of plastic and glass waste in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, UN-Habitat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding in July 2021 with Development Inc., Diageo, IBI Group, Nestlé Waters and PepsiCo, to jointly promote sustainable waste management and responsible production and consumption within the private sector and general public.

After two days of urban deliberations, the first National Urban Forum of Lebanon, organized by UN-Habitat in partnership with ESCWA, concluded, confirming that the future socio-economic recovery and sustainable development of the country must place Lebanese cities at the heart of these efforts.

Today, UN-Habitat and CatalyticAction inaugurated a number of innovatively rehabilitated sidewalks in the neighbourhood of Karantina, close to the Beirut Governmental Hospital, the National HIV and TB Centre and Karantina Public Park.
