DEWA is strategic sponsor of 9th Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport organised by RTA

In line with its commitment to the community and promoting sustainable development in Dubai and the UAE, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced its participation as strategic sponsor for the 9th Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport organised by Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The award ceremony will be held on 20 February 2017 and will motivate the public and private sectors to contribute to the reduction of traffic congestion, environmental conservation, and the development of quick and effective solutions to improve the standard of living, the environment, and Dubai’s global prestige. It also aims to encourage innovative environmental sustainability strategies.

“Following the vision of the leadership, and in line with the ‘Green Economy for Sustainable Development’ initiative outlined by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to build a sustainable future for Dubai, DEWA is keen to support efforts to promote sustainable development, the preservation of the environment, and the shift to a green economy. In this regard, we are participating in the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport as a strategic sponsor, which is consistent with DEWA's strategy of supporting social development and promoting a culture of sustainability across all aspects of life and different economic and service sectors. We believe that the culture of sustainability and the conservation of resources as well as the rationalisation of consumption can be achieved only through concerted efforts at various levels. Together, we can fulfil the UAE Vision 2021’s goal of a sustainable environment for the UAE, and Dubai Plan 2021’s aspiration to make Dubai a smart and sustainable city,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“DEWA seeks to educate and encourage organizations and community members to play active and positive roles in the development of a safe and easy transportation system for everyone, and strengthen cooperation with institutions and strategic partners in the areas of transport, safety and the environment. We also support and promote successful initiatives in these key areas, as well as stimulate and encourage creativity, entrepreneurship, and the race for innovative initiatives in various areas of transportation for the best interests of this great country,” added HE Al Tayer.

HE Al Tayer emphasised the importance of the Award for DEWA and that the mass transit bus initiative for DEWA’s employees has helped reduce the use of private vehicles and encouraged people to use mass transit. The initiative has succeeded in lowering the risk of road traffic accidents in vital locations such as power plants and also lessened harmful carbon emissions equivalent to planting 30,000 trees. He further noted that the initiative has reduced traffic in Dubai by 7,740 vehicles per month.

The Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport’s various goals include educating and encouraging individuals and social institutions to play active and positive roles in the development of infrastructure and public transport; promoting sustainable transport; among all segments of society; and supporting and promoting successful initiatives in the areas of transportation, safety and environment. The Award also stimulates and encourages creativity and entrepreneurship and drives innovative initiatives in various areas of transportation for the maximum benefit of all.
