World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2018 opens doors to green policy leaders on 24th October 2018

The Summit will oversee focused discussions with prominent leaders of the industry in addition to plenary sessions

The fifth edition of The World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2018 will open its doors to local and international thought leaders, policy makers and decision-makers of the green economy today (Wednesday, 24th October) at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the fifth edition of WGES 2018 will run under the theme ‘Driving innovation, Leading change’ and will conclude on Thursday.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy in Dubai and Chairman of WGES 2018, said: “Since its inception under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the World Green Economy Summit has made significant achievements and adopted several initiatives that aimed to promote the green economy growth on regional and global levels. It has also launched several projects in the UAE and the region, which contributed in making a paradigm shift in the vision of the region’s and international countries due to the significant transformation into green economy and sustainability, which is a safe option for development and ensuring the well-being of future generations.”

“We are working tirelessly with our partners in the region and the world to bring the summit’s visions, ideas and proposals into fruition, while continuing to pursue strategies that include disruptive technology to accelerate the transition into green economy and promote investment in green innovation,” HE Al Tayer said.

The 2018 summit has witnessed the participation of more than 3700 participants of global experts, thought leaders and executive officials in green economy and sustainable, representatives of financial institutions and global markets and will discuss innovative strategies that contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development  Agenda and strengthening Dubai's status as a capital for green economy, and to support the UAE’s efforts of in this respect.

The first day of the summit will focus on driving the green economy in the national agenda and will also highlight Dubai’s leap into a green economy. In addition, it will feature parallel sessions on World Expos – Inspiring through collaboration, which will highlight the role of collaboration in solving global issues and creating a positive impact. The session on creating the future through a circular economy will raise awareness on the circular economy concepts, whereas the session on the green economy and disruptive technologies will offer audiences insights on blockchain’s potential in accelerating climate-change actions. The highlight of the day will be a special session on Youth Engagement, which will examine the Climate Innovations Exchange (CLIX) model for young green entrepreneurs.

The second day of The Summit will begin with an interesting discussion on green bond market. In addition, there will be sessions on China’s green energy strategy that will underline the implications of China’s transition to a green economy on a local and global level. Day two will also witness the launch of the 2018 World Green Economy Report: Inspiring Innovations in Business, Finance & Policy, the Emirate Energy Award and Dubai Declaration.

While plenary and parallel sessions will take centre stage at The Summit, WGES 2018 will also witness focused discussion at “Engineering a better world: The technology of repairing the future” session with Francois Hollande, Former President of France, Christina Figueres - Former Secretary General of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Jason Drew CEO, Agriprotein South Africa.

WGES 2018 will be held in conjunction with the Water, Energy, Technology and Energy Exhibition ‘WETEX 2018’, as part of the Green Week activities in Dubai.
