Nespresso inspired to pay tribute to Cuban coffee tradition with the Limited Edition Cubanía

A new level of intensity, inspired by Cuban coffee tradition

Beirut September, 2014 Inspired by the warmth of the Cuban way of life and its iconic coffee ritual, Nespresso coffee experts have stretched their mastery of the art of coffee creation to produce Cubanía – a taste of Latin passion.

Coffee is a way of life for Cubans and their extensive global diaspora: a social moment of the day when coffee supersedes conversation and pleasure rules. With Cubanía, Nespresso invites coffee lovers on a sensory journey igniting not only fresh tastes and aroma sensations, but visiting new realms of coffee culture and history.

The way of drinking coffee in Cuba – Cubano-style – is a leisurely ritual that mixes a portion of coffee with cane sugar until it reaches a thick, creamy paste, then combines it with yet more coffee. For many, Cuba represents a different pace of life, and its idiosyncratic coffee ritual is representative of this sensual Latin style: a life in which there is time to socialize, to enjoy one another’s company.

With the Limited Edition Cubanía, Nespresso has broken its own coffee intensity record.  Going one step beyond the Kazaar Grand Cru of intensity 12, Cubanía reaches intensity 13 – the intensity scale at Nespresso being defined by a combination of roasting, bitterness and body. Achieving this was made possible by an innovative application of expertise that drew upon earlier creations, both those of Nespresso, as of an early 20th century German professor, Karl Lendrich, who discovered the gentle process of steaming coffee to change its chemical and physical structure.

There is a simple equation that determines a coffee’s intensity. It is based on the density of the beans roasted and their potential extraction into the cup – choosing which coffees can deliver this experience takes Nespresso know-how. Nespresso coffee experts already knew of a mild Colombian coffee capable of taking a long roast, yet delivering coffee flavour. Since acidity decreases one’s sense of a coffee’s acidity, the choice of this complementary mild Arabica was a critical one. The coffee experts added to this a high-end Indian Robusta slowly steam-treated to enhance much greater extractability than is usual, and boost the experience of intensity to an unprecedented level. Together with other selected coffees, this combination has produced a rich, creamy creation that delivers a powerful impact to the palate.

To enjoy Cubanía in the Cubano style, Nespresso coffee experts recommend extracting a 25ml ristretto, mixing it with a measure of cane sugar, extracting a second 25ml ristretto and pouring it over the creamy coffee and sugar mixture.

This intense and syrupy black coffee enables coffee aficionados to fully experience coffee the Latin Way. For Nespresso, inviting Club Members into new ways of experiencing coffee, to understand, appreciate and experience new coffee rituals, is part of its continuous challenge.

Taking a Café Cubano and combining it with 25ml of hot milk delivers a coffee and milk elixir which is reminiscent of the indulgent and velvety dulce de leche, and revealing cookie, caramel and sweet notes. The wild yet complex aromatics of Cubanía are revealed when it is taken neat, in a 25ml measure.
